I remember back to 2004 when baseball was corrupt and almost everyone was on steroids. It was great, the Sox won the World Series and the steroid thing wasn’t that big a deal because everyone was doing them. Turns out including the World Series MVP that year our dear old friend Manny Ramirez.
Of course after testing starting players got smarter and started using HGH instead of steroids, but I guess Manny didn’t get the memo. Having signed in the off-season with Tampa Bay, Manny must have felt he needed to prove to other teams in his division, especially the Sox, that he could still play. So not having learned his lesson from his 50 game suspension in Los Angels, Manny went back to the steroids. Allegedly.
See he failed a drug test while just on the job with the Rays. A failed test at that point resulted in a 100 game suspension. He attempted an appeal but even with his people watching as they tested his second sample, he tested positive. Instead of serving the suspension, he opted to retire. Which should be the end of the story.
I mean really, he was batting .059 (1-17) at that point and after his failings in Los Angeles and his .261 average and one home run when he was claimed off waivers by the White Sox, he should have just retired. He wasn’t going to get another $20 million a year pay day, in fact his Rays contract was one year for a tenth of that.
Of course there was his arrest for domestic battery last fall. Just to sully his name a little more.
And that’s where I thought our story would end. Sure he’ll likely be in the Hall of Fame when his time comes. He was a dominant force for over a decade. And if he was cheating, I think it’s OK since everyone else was cheating. If he’s on the juice and hitting against a pitcher on the juice, they’re both on it. Just saying.
But nope. Manny filed for reinstatement saying he’s a changed man and wants to prove to everyone that he can still play. MLB reduced his 100 game suspension to 50 games and he’s currently working out in Florida.
Like I said, his retirement should have been the end, now we have to hear about this clown for the next few months.
