Finally Some Sox

Just spit ballin here but if you were thinking of trading a guy that’s been down in Pawtucket, just beating the snot out of the competition, would a good way to showcase him be bringing him up to start right after the All Star Break against a team you’re thinking of trading him to? I thought so too.

So in an effort to “set the rotation” as Tito puts it, Caly has been called up for a spot start tonight against the Blue Jays. With more and more rumors surfacing about the Yankees being contenders in the Halladay sweepstakes doesn’t it make sense to showcase Clay against major league hitting? Especially against the team he could be going to? I think that if Halladay is heading to Philly the Sox really don’t care but if New York is seriously in the mix and has the players to get it done the Sox will trade Clay as one of the pieces to make it happen.

One of the other rumors from Toronto is that the Sox are looking at Scott Rolen. The former Cardinal and Phillie played under Terry Francona his first four years in the league which included a rookie of the year award. This is just insurance in case Mike Lowell can’t come back, but I think it’s a decent pick up so long as you’re not giving up too much to get him. It beats having guys named Bates in the lineup.

Another rumor that came down the pike yesterday from Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com: The Rockies have discussed a Garrett Atkins-for-Takashi Saito trade with the Red Sox, but both teams continue to explore other options, according to major-league sources. While the Rockies are eager to dump Atkins, who is earning $7.05 million, they might want more of a return for the third baseman than Saito, who missed most of the second half of last season with a sprained elbow ligament. I make this deal in a second. I guy that you have under contract for one year that’s almost over for a productive third base option. Again, this is contingent on no Mike Lowell.

Finally, my favorite. The Julio Lugo era in Boston seems to be coming to a close. Ken Rosenthal also reported that the Sox are desperately trying to trade Julio Lugo. Lugo who Theo had undoubtable man love for is in the third year of a four year $36 million contract. A contract that the Mets are so grateful they didn’t sign him to. If the Sox can’t find someone willing to take him, they’ll likely release him. The writings on the wall and I’m loving it.

500 & Counting

Red-Sox-500th-Sellout-Baseb__1245285429_5490

For those of us not paying attention to the Sox, last night they celebrated their 500th straight sell out at Fenway. On the same night Brad Penny scored his 100th career win in five stellar innings allowing only three hits but much like Matzucrappa threw 100 pitches in those five innings.

Good for the Sox selling out 500 straight. I can say that I was at one of the last non sell out games back in early spring 2003 against the Blue Jays. That’s right. My brother and I drove into town, without tickets, parked the car for $20 at a lot near Fenway and as we were walking towards the park had a guy on the street sell us two front row box seats for $25 each. I don’t think you get that same experience even in a Monsoon near Fenway today. I think it’s great that the marketing guys have come up with ways to make an old, cramped ballpark a place people want to be seen at but I’d take a new Fenway in a heartbeat and won’t bore you on another New Fenway tirade.

Back to Penny for a moment. The Sox are fielding offers for him and Saito. In fact the Rangers had offered Saito straight up for Hank Blalock. Blalock is hitting .251 with 13 homers and 30 RBI’s. That seems fair value for Saito who is 39, but once Josh Hamilton went down for a months, they pulled the offer. So if the Rangers were willing to give him up for Saito, what can the Sox expect for Penny. Penny has proven this season that he has decent stuff and isn’t a liability on the mound.

But I ask the question; why trade either? The Sox bullpen is the best in baseball and Saito is a part of that. Not something I’d want to break up. I think Penny is a better #5 than Matzucrappa. I think the reason that the Sox held Smoltz back one more week was to give Matzucrappa one more chance at making it. He is slated to pitch Friday night and if he has yet another craptastic outing that may be the end of him. Not saying the Sox will trade him, but isn’t his contract a rookie deal where they could send him to Pawtucket?

Today’s the 18th, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Sox make a deal (minor or major) by the end of the month. With the logjam of pitching they have now, they need to do something.
