Free Agency Starts at 4PM

20130312-052318.jpg

Pats fans can cross Percy Harvin and Anquan Boldin off their wish lists. Boldin went from the AFC and Super Bowl champ Ravens to the NFC Champ 49ers for a sixth round pick. Harvin was a little more expensive going to Seattle with a first, seventh, and undisclosed mid round pick going back to the Vikings.

That’s trades though. Free agency kicks off at 4PM EST. What I want to know is, are the Pats planning on making a splash?

Bob Kraft said yesterday he wants Welker to retire a Pat. It wouldn’t be a splash per se, but it’d address a need. Lock him up long term but not too much money. You need money to invest on defense.

It’s also rumored they want Talib back. Rumor also has it that the Redskins are going to press hard for him. The Pats would likely lose in a bidding war because they don’t want to commit too much cash. Let him go if Washington is going to overpay. But you better have backup plans especially with the market littered with decent corners.

What about safety and pass rush? Arizona safety Adrian Wilson would be a decent second choice if you can’t pull down Gholston from San Fran. Ed Reed is all but re-signing in Baltimore with the cap money they freed up dumping Boldin.

What about a Dwight Freeney (rumored to Denver), or James Harrison (not holding my breath) to improve the pass rush?

All I know is I want the Pats to come out like in 2007 when free agency started; with a big middle finger to the rest of the league. We’re putting all our chips in and going for broke and a few more Lombardi trophies before Brady is done.

We’ll have to wait till four but I’m really hoping the Pats aren’t quiet.

You Don’t Say

20130130-053102.jpg

A torn triceps muscle; out for the year? Wait, he’s coming back before the playoffs? Isn’t that pretty quick?

Well, how about doing it by cheating. Not that you didn’t think he was on something, but here we go from Deadspin:

Mitch Ross, an admitted former steroids dealer, is the owner of S.W.A.T.S. After being sued by former Ram David Vobora, who failed a steroid test, Ross began filming his phone calls with clients. He shared with SI one from October, a call from Ray Lewis, seeking treatment for his torn triceps that would keep him out until the playoffs. Ross prescribed Lewis, among other things, the company’s “Ultimate Spray”—a deer-antler extract that contains IGF-1.

“Spray on my elbow every two hours?” Lewis asked.

“No,” Ross said, “under your tongue.”

Toward the end of the talk, Lewis asked Ross to “just pile me up and just send me everything you got, because I got to get back on this this week.”

Ray Lewis asking the owner of an embattled supplement company how to use a banned substance? You’d think that would be a huge story, right? Nah. Because the same story came out two years ago and no one cared then.

Here’s Yahoo, in August of 2011:

S.W.A.T.S. founder Mitch Ross provided several text messages from a phone number belonging to All-Pro Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis acknowledging receipt of shipments of the spray and asking for more.

If it was any other player, the NFL would do something. But because Ray Lewis is a good story, he plays Sunday. What could the NFL market if they didn’t let him play?

I think SNL had it best:

Pats Thursday

Aqib Talib is a free agent. When he went down on Sunday we all knew the team was pretty screwed. Turns out we were right. Not blaming the defense entirely for the loss, offensive inefficiency in a big game AGAIN is still my number one, but Talib getting injured didn’t help anything. I still contend the 49ers would have been a very difficult hurdle had they won.

I digress.

I know you’re asking why I’d flash a Revis pick. Rumor has it the Jets want to trade the All Pro. The chance of him getting a trade to the Pats within the division I know are slim, but how about a three way? Just spit balling.

I would do anything in my power to make this happen. Talib is a good corner, Revis is on another planet. Assuming his injuries were related to not going to camp last season and he can stay healthy, I’d want this guy on the Patriots. He’s good enough that he shuts down an entire side of the field. Quarterbacks don’t even look on his side of the field. With Denard on the other side and McCourty at safety you’re looking so much better on defense. And he wears 24 just like Ty Law, make it happen.

It’s fantasy land but you know, my blog, my rules.

Championship Weekend

Well, now it’s Championship weekend. Falcons and 49ers over in the NFC meanwhile Pats and Ravens in the AFC.

Let’s get to it.

San Francisco (-4) vs @Atlanta
Atlanta is such a fraud team. The kind of fraud team that would win this game if I pick against them. But really that’s a chance I’m willing to take. We saw the 49ers a few weeks back and just how good their offense is against a passing offense. Matt Ryan is no Tom Brady which means the game will be even tougher for the Falcons. I hope Atlanta makes me wrong but I’m taking the 49ers in the NFC Championship for the second year in a row.

@New England (-9) vs Baltimore
This line opened at 9.5. Really? On what planet are the Pats this year 9.5 points better than the Ravens? They played each other back in week three…

I prefer the end zone camera. This shows for sure that it was no good.

Stupid replacement refs.

I’m a true believer in not poking the bear. I don’t think that advertising Ray Lewis’s retirement party is a smart move. I don’t think pissing him off is a good idea. You could end up murdered and his white suit he was wearing that day could go missing.

I think the Pats can win this game. I think the Pats are the better team overall. It’s going to take a mistake free game for sure. They can’t allow a 97 yard Ray Rice TD on the opening play from scrimmage. They can’t allow the Baltimore receivers to get behind the safeties. And they certainly can’t let Joe Flacco beat them by chucking it up and getting some bullshit pass interference call (I’m looking at you Arrington).

I don’t think the Pats offense is going to have problems. Whatever the Ravens decide to take away, the Patriots will adjust. If they take away Welker look for a Brandon Lloyd, Aaron Hernandez party. If they decide to focus on shutting down the running game, watch Welker blow up.

But at the end of the day, the nine point spread is absurd. Like the 49 game, I hope I’m wrong but I’m taking the Ravens to cover, Pats to win.

49ers and Pats in the Super Bowl, sounds like I picked that before. Yup, last year same pick. Can’t believe I had Carolina there with the 49ers in my NFC Preview column or Carolina beating them. What was I thinking. Oh well, I picked the stupid Chiefs who had the worst record in the league winning west. You can’t win them all. Here’s hoping the Pats can this week and again in two weeks.

Divisional Playoff Weekend

Divisional playoffs already. Well it feels like months since the Pats played. Listening to sports radio, this has been way too much buildup.

Let’s get to the games…

@Denver (-9.5) vs Baltimore
As Pats fans, who would you want? Even a depleted Baltimore team scares me more than Denver, even at Denver. That’s just means I’m sure we won’t have to worry about it since Denver should easily handle this one. I don’t think they cover though. Ravens cover, Broncos win.

@San Francisco (-3) vs Green Bay
I’ve wrestled with the game. Will San Fran beat the snot out of Green Bay like they crushed the Pats? Well, the Pack lost 30-22 in week one. I’m taking the Pack in the rematch. I think San Fran can lose. Plus it will set up a great NFC Championship game.

@Atlanta (-2.5) vs Seattle
Well based on my previous comment about the NFC Championship game it should be very clear I’m taking the Seahawks. Atlanta is a bunch of frauds. I don’t care how many games they won, frauds.

@New England (-9.5) vs Houston
My fear is a Jets two years ago game. The Pats blew them out of the water and then the Jets knocked the Pats out of the playoffs. I think this Pats team is better than two years ago. More importantly I think this is a better Patriots defense. I don’t think this will be a blowout like on Monday Night Football. I think the Texans are better than that. I say the Texans cover, Pats win.

All dogs. We’ve seen how well that worked earlier this season, hopefully this is better.
