UMASS Lowell Makes BU History

20130325-051728.jpg

I don’t make much of where I went to college. Probably because I didn’t graduate. There was some bitterness how they’d changed my major mid-stream and how it was going to take me at least three more years to graduate after having three years in. But those that know me, know that the partying and having fun parts of college was what I enjoyed most and wasn’t a huge academic.

I bring this up because UMASS Lowell is still “my school”. I follow the hockey team (mostly on Facebook) and root for them to knock out rivals, UNH, BC, BU, Maine, Merrimack, Northeastern, and the rest of Hockey East.

Friday night they knocked out Providence to make it to the Hockey East Championship game. A game they’d never won or even played in when I was at school. They’d face the winner of the BU/BC game which turned out to be BU who came back from 2-0 down.

It was a great game Saturday night. Back and forth, posts rung, questionable penalties, but a goalie standing on his head made the difference. Even after winning 1-0 the media wanted to focus on The Legendary Jack Parker. Here’s a few things they left out on Jack. Remember he stepped down as the Athletic Director….why?

Here’s the story from NY Mag:

When two Boston University hockey players were accused of sexual assault in a three-month period earlier this year, university officials did the responsible thing and launched an investigation to determine whether “the culture and climate of the ice hockey program contributed in some way to the alleged actions.” The report found that the players’ privileged status on campus — reinforced by academic special treatment and nonstop free drinks — fostered a “culture of sexual entitlement.” It failed to mention that some of some of the players don’t believe in consent and love group sex. Unpublished subcommittee reports obtained by the Boston Globe have all the lurid and depressing details, which school officials say were left out of the public report because they are unverified and to protect student’s identities.

The highlights:

• “BU hockey players, surrounded by adoring fans, had ‘the perception that they need not seek consent for sexual contact.’”

• The players don’t understand why their teammates were charged with sexual assault. “You don’t ask [permission for sex] when you are drunk,” one said.

• A female student who said a player “shoved his hands down her pants at a party and refused to stop even as she was punching him” didn’t report the incident because “that’s just what [BU hockey players] do.”

• Coach Jack Parker “told the task force he had stressed the importance of being respectful to women and advised players to avoid group sex, which the confidential report notes players engage in with surprising regularity.”

• Parker professed ignorance of the 2009 NCAA championship party where “dozens of guests drank from kegs in the locker room showers and took to the ice naked to shoot pucks” (“It was insane,” one attendee reported. “People were having sex in the penalty box”), but reprimanded the players for it shortly afterwards.

One player attributed the carte blanche given the team to the fact that Parker “cares too much about hurting the important players’ feelings.” Parker lost his executive athletic director title but will continue to coach at the same salary.

Let’s stop talking about how great Jack was. He was JoePa without the pedophelia. Complete loss of institutional control.

Back to UMASS Lowell, who take their top seed to NH Friday at 4:30 against Wisconsin. Here’s hoping the Riverhawks go far.

Eff It Friday

Like Wednesday I’m going random.

Starting with UConn for screwing up my brackets. I don’t pick you, you win a God damned national title, I pick you (not all the way mind you) and you’re ousted in the first round.

Eff you.

Second Eff You goes to Danny Ainge. Criticize Red for not breaking up the Big Three in the early 90′s which sent the Celtics into a tailspin of mediocrity for more than a decade, now you turn around and do the same thing? By not doing anything yesterday Danny ensured the mediocrity of this franchise for at least the next 10 years.

Eff you too.

A third eff you to the Bruins who are in an absolute tailspin as the season is winding to a close. If it weren’t for the division lead they’d be barely holding the 5th seed. I get injuries but the team defense has gone out the window. Huge bag of suck. Seeing them swept in the first round, wouldn’t shock me in the least.

Eff them too.

Finally the Patriots are effed. Don’t think Mario Williams in Buffalo has no bearing on the Pats. Turnstile Light can’t stop any of the top rushers in the league and Williams is the top. So now Buffalo who was already giving you fits, will give you more. Great.

So eff you Bills, you effed the Pats.

I know it’s Friday and I should be happier but eff it dude, let’s go bowling.

Wildcats Win

So I wasn’t home last night, I’m in AZ.

They don’t have Comcast Sports New England, they have Fox Sports AZ. So going out to dinner last night, the AZ Wildcats against USC basketball game was on.

So I watched. Well out of the corner of my eye. Wildcats pulled away in the second half and crushed USC.

I know, you don’t care. But that’s what was on.

I guess the PGA is up the street this week and schools are closed here for Rodeo Week. Yeah, that’s a real thing.

So I’ll try and bring a hot sports take on Monday but for now I’m going to enjoy AZ.

Kingdom Crashing

You’d think after the doom and gloom column yesterday that the “Kingdom” I’m referring to is the Patriots but it’s not. I’ve moved on and there’s other sports stories that are catching my eye so I need to write about them.

Yup, Patriots fans remember him well. Pete Carroll.

Well, after Parcells left the Pats following the Super Bowl in January 1997, Pete Carroll was brought in as the head of the Pats. He was the anti-Tuna. A player’s coach. Happy go lucky Pete would be able to rally the team around him because they liked him.

Well, Pete proceeded to lose an additional game each year he coached the Pats. From 10-6 to 9-7 to 8-8 in his final season as head coach. Following a 6-10 mark as head coach of the Jets in 1994 it became clear that Carroll wasn’t a good fit in the NFL and he headed to USC.

While at USC he split the National Championship in 2003 and won the whole thing in 2004. 2005 saw him lose to Texas in the National Title game and from there won three straight Rose Bowls. After his most disappointing season since his 6-6 start at USC, the Trojans finished this year 9-4 and beat Boston College in the Emerald Bowl. Carroll ends his run with an impressive 97-19 record.

Now I don’t know if the writing was on the wall as the team limped to a 9-3 finish, but apparently it was. After the USC basketball team was investigated by the NCAA regarding OJ Mayo, it was just a matter of time before they started investigating the football team. Much like Calipari leaving Memphis before it started to hit the fan, Carroll is bailing on USC who is about to be thunderstruck by the NCAA. That could force USC to vacate some of it’s wins and possibly NCAA titles. We shall wait and see.

The thing of it is, I hate USC. I’ve never liked them. So to see the program on the brink of collapse just makes me smile. We all know that college athletics are corrupt and littered with “indiscretions” it’s just nice to see one of the top programs knocked down a few pegs. Go Boise State!

Brackets Busted!

Think of a Peter Griffin, Family Guy voice…

“Stupid March Madness, with your brackets, and basketball…”

So out of the six people that took the challenge against me, three of us took Pittsburgh. Why? Well, we probably wanted to go with UCONN but every time UCONN got the #1 ranking in the country, they’d lose to Pitt. So it was pretty clear that Pitt had to win the whole thing right? Who could knock off Pitt if the #1 team in the country was toppled twice by them? Well, Pitt lost to Villanova.

Two people picked Louisville. That’s the strong Rick Pitino ties to the area. After screwing up the Celtics he returned to the college ranks and has coached a team that has consistently been in the run for a national title. But that’s why they play the games and Louisville, in spite of their #1 seed, lost to Michigan State.

And of course the remaining pick was Da Guy and he picked UCONN. He wasn’t swayed the way we all were onto the Pitt bandwagon and can possibly take the bracket title with a win. So much for my thought of Missouri knocking out UCONN.

Where did it go wrong? Well, you have to try to run a Cinderella into the dance. I had two #1′s going to the finals, I just chose the wrong ones. Gonzaga a four seed going to the Finals was a mistake as was a three seed Missouri doing the same. I hate North Carolina and I think my hatred of them had me take Gonzaga to knock them off. I rode Texas to knock off Villanova and Duke which didn’t happen either.

So while Da Guy is still alive, there’s always next year for me. At least I didn’t bet money on my picks and I got 67% of my picks right (40 of 60). That’s a “D” grade right? Oh well.
