A Letdown?

The Sox had three options heading into the trade deadline yesterday:

  • Be buyers: Add pieces to make a “run”.
  • Be sellers: Admit defeat on the season and sell off parts
  • No nothing.

So I’ll preface everything with this; had the Sox traded away the farm trying to get players to make a “run” you’d be more pissed right? I know I would.

The Red Sox did essentially nothing yesterday. Their major move was moving Scott Podsednik and Matt Albers to the Diamondbacks for left specialist Craig Breslow.

In a very cool stat Podsednik is actually the all time Red Sox leader in batting average with a minimum of 70 at bats. His .387 places him at the top of the list above Rudy Pemberton at .346 and Ted Williams at .344.

The move didn’t even register a blip on my radar. I guess the good news is that Franklin Morales can move back into the rotation where he was doing well. And they’ll likely need him as Beckett, who wasn’t traded, was hurt yet again last night. I don’t know if you saw the article on my Facebook, but check this one out. Beckett is a dick!

Back to the trades. The team also finally threw in the towel on Lars Anderson. His buy sell time was probably four years ago. Since then he’s never done anything. The got back AA pitcher Steven Wright, a knuckleballer from Cleveland.

And on that note, let’s watch some Steven Wright highlights:

Now all of a sudden the trade deadline doesn’t look too bad. Because I’m laughing. Laughing at what a joke this franchise has become in less than a decade. From bold moves in 2004, building and incorporating their own young guys to win again in 2007, to turning into the early 2000′s Yankees. Buying free agents that don’t help you win anything and saddle you with untradable contracts.

It’s called Red Sox.

Bring on the Pats!

Deadline Day

So about 10 hours to the trade deadline and no word from Boston yet. The Halladay talk has really quieted down and it appears Texas is a dark horse to get Halladay. Problem on that one is that Texas wants Toronto to pick up his salary this year. Um, the reason they want to move him is a salary dump, no way they pay his salary unless the package of prospects coming back is obscene.

So back to the Sox. I’ve heard two rumors out there. One is a three team deal that would land them Victor Martinez and the other is a deal straight up for Adrian Gonzalez.

We’ll start with the Gonzalez trade. The rumor is Buchholz, Lars Anderson, Justin Masterson, Ryan Westmoreland and Jed Lowrie for Gonzalez and David Eckstein. Now, there’s rumors out there that Westmoreland has a clause in his contract that he can go back to school if traded. Seems like a pretty dumb clause and if it existed that Kevin Towers wouldn’t want him included in a deal. I don’t think that I wouldn’t give up on Lowrie just yet considering he can play short or third. If he’s a piece that San Diego is asking for, then yes I would ask for Eckstein back in the trade given Nick Green’s inability to make the throw to first consistently. If the Sox could somehow swing it to be Bowden instead of Buchholz I’d prefer that as well. Masterson is a piece I’m reluctant to give up as well so if they inserted Tazawa instead, that’d be awesome.

So my proposal (assuming that San Diego is asking for Lowrie) would be Gonzalez and Eckstein from San Diego for Tazawa, Bowden, Lars Anderson, Lowrie, Westmoreland (assuming the contract clause is bullshit) and whatever other AA/AAA pitcher the Padres want. If Bard is your closer of the future, I’m very reluctant to move him in a deal like this, so that’s why I left him off the table.

The Victor Martinez deal I would make but minus a couple of those guys. Don’t get me wrong, I like him considering he hits from both sides for power, but he’s not as good a fielder as Gonzalez. If it were a Bowden, Anderson, Tazawa type deal I’d do it.

Did I mention that either deal can include Matzucrappa? Figured I’d throw that in there.

By not moving Buchholz in either potential deal, that still leaves your rotation in tact. It’s not the greatest rotation but with Wake coming back from the DL, he’ll be eating some innings for you down the stretch. Wake is better than Penny and Smoltz this season, so clearly he’s your #4 if not your #3 behind Lester and Beckett.

I still would prefer the Halladay deal and would include Buchholz in that deal in a minute. But like I said at the top, if he doesn’t stay in Toronto, it looks like it’s Texas. At least that’s not New York.

Back Monday with a recap of all the action. I don’t know if anyone uses Twitter but you can get random updates from me by adding me, jaylizotte .
