Keep It Classy

20130419-052901.jpg

Yesterday Toucher and Rich played the audio of the video I posted yesterday, it still gave me goose bumps.

It did get me thinking of how the Sox would handle the game tonight. I tried calling Felger and Mazz but couldn’t get through. Around 10:45 the thought still swirling in my head as I was driving home from watching the Sox, I called the Adam Jones show on The Sports Hub.

My statement and question was simple. The Anthem at the Bruins game seemed so organic and real; how are the Red Sox and more specifically Uncle Larry and Dr Charles going to handle Friday night at Fenway.

Jones said its not a competition and they’ll handle it with grace and class.

But it’s Uncle Larry. He doesn’t want to be outshined. I find it hard to believe that whatever is planned tonight (they’re dropping the flag on the Monster, that’s confirmed) won’t come off as insincere even if it’s not intentional.

Hearing stories related to this tragedy has given me hope with humanity. Strangers’ acts of kindness to other strangers has been great. Here’s hoping the Sox keep that going and don’t get hokey.

Start the Healing

“The running community is a wonderful thing, made of caring, compassionate, and selfless individuals. With heavy heart we will feel the pain of yesterday’s tragedy and remember those affected for a lifetime.
The running community is an amazing thing, filled with strong, motivated, and enduring people. Overcoming pain and conquering fear is what we do, and as a community this is how we will rise above the cowardice of yesterday’s tragedy and continue running.”

-John Mortimer – BC Asst. Running Coach

Remember when baseball and football started playing after 9/11? We didn’t forget about 9/11 but it helped us get back to some normalcy.

Even with no suspect, motive etc. last night the Red Sox took the field. They donned black armbands in memory of the victims. The Yankees played Sweet Caroline in honor of the victims as moments of silence were observed all over sports.

Both of the head coaches for the C’s and B’s shared their experiences of the prior days event. Tonight the Bruins will play at home. Likely they’ll also be wearing something for the victims as the Celtics likely will heading into the post season.

Like football and baseball helped the healing process after 9/11, we’ll look to our local teams to help with the healing process. We won’t forget, but it will give us a sense of getting back to normalcy.

Say A Prayer

I know I usually keep it on the lighthearted side here. Angry about the local team not making a deal or squandering a lead etc.

Today’s not the day for it.

Today is for personal reflection and prayers.

I’m very tuned into the running community. I have several friends that are runners. Some even consider me a runner.

Yesterday for so many people is a culmination of months of training. Many had to qualify in other races just to get a number. The others, they’re running for charities and causes to raise awareness of their cause.

Like I said, it’s a culmination of that hard work. It’s a happy day for their friends, families and strangers who are along the course clapping, cheering, and offering encouragement.

There isn’t anything negative about this day. It’s a happy day and when the weather cooperates like yesterday it makes it even better.

For a coward or group of cowards to do what they did yesterday, taking innocent lives while hurting several others, makes me feel so many different emotions.

I’m grateful for all the first responders, volunteers, and just regular people that were just helping others. I’m angry at whoever did this. I shouldn’t be, but there’s that inkling of fear the next time I’m at a large event. There’s so much sadness for the victims as you hear stories.

So last night I said a prayer and this morning I’ll do the same. Think of these people in your prayers and hope our government doesn’t let us down in tracking down these cowards.

Long Weekend Recap

I promised a weekend full of sports with playoff action for the Bruins and Celtics in Friday’s post and they didn’t disappoint, too much anyways.

We’ll start in reverse order.

The Bruins were in Montreal last night for game three of their series. Well, they were down 0-2 after a loss Saturday night and looked awful on Saturday. They came out and scored 3:11 into the game as David Krejci stuffed it home. This was on the heals of the Bruins having yet another playoff penalty when they had too many men on the ice. Horton added to the scoring as he hit one off the back of Price to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead heading into the break.

Quickly into the second they added their third goal and I get the impressions, they took their foot of the accelerator. It was funny listening to Jack Edwards say, “The last time the Bruins had a 3-0 lead was….I’m sorry there was a technical issue there that prevented me from finishing that sentence.”

Well, he didn’t finish it but it had to be in everyone’s mind.

When it was 3-2 with about 15 minutes left in the third you had to be on the edge of your couch. I was. The Bruins held on adding an empty netter to score the win 4-2 and get on the series scoreboard. Now down 1-2 they’ll head to Lake Placid for a few days to channel the 1980 US Olympic team, before playing in Montreal again on Thursday (why the extra day off?).

Before that the Sox won on Patriot’s Day. It actually was their third win in a row after a loss in the series opener against the Blue Jays on Friday. That’s a winning streak. The complete opposite of last year when they lost on Patriot’s Day and were swept by the Rays.

The more important thing was that Matzucrappa was not so crappy. In fact he was stellar. He pitched seven innings of one hit baseball while only walking one batter. So what happened? Did he actually listen to the pitching coach? Actually listen to Francona? Was it having his binky Varitek behind the plate? Honestly at this point, I’m just going to go with a fluke. He’s pitched well against Toronto in his career. If he keeps it up, great, but I’m not holding my breath.

Before the Sox game completed there was a Boston marathon record for the men as Geoffrey Mutai ran the race in a record 2:03:02. It’s a course and world record however since the course is aided by downhill slope and tailwind it doesn’t count as a world record.

Congrats to my Goon friends (see the link to the right) who killed it at 3:08:37 (Thor) 3:09:52 (Jay) and 3:16:56 (Gina). Thinking that next year I may run the race. I’ll need a charity bib though because I won’t be running a 3:05 qualifying run.

Finally the Celtics played an incredible back and forth game Sunday night as they won it on a Ray Allen three pointer with seconds left in the game. If the series plays like game one, it could go seven games with either team winning. They’re back at it tonight.

Hope You Got In

Yesterday at 9AM the registration for the Boston Marathon opened. And by 5:03PM it was closed. Now that may not seem like a big deal, but last year it took 2 months for the same field to fill up.

Who cares you ask? Well I do. First off because I have friends that not only got in the registration, but qualified.

I don’t think many folks understand what it takes to get into Boston. Sure you have to get in the registration but you also have to qualify beforehand. That means that you need to hit the times below:

AGE REQUIRED REQUIRED
GROUP MEN PACE WOMEN PACE

18-34 3 Hrs. 10 Mins. 7:15 3 Hrs. 40 Mins. 8:23

35-39 3 Hrs. 15 Mins. 7:26 3 Hrs. 45 Mins. 8:35

40-44 3 Hrs. 20 Mins. 7:38 3 Hrs. 50 Mins. 8:46

45-49 3 Hrs. 30 Mins. 8:01 4 Hrs. 00 Mins. 9:09

50-54 3 Hrs. 35 Mins. 8:12 4 Hrs. 05 Mins. 9:21

55-59 3 Hrs. 45 Mins. 8:35 4 Hrs. 15 Mins. 9:44

60-64 4 Hrs. 00 Mins. 9:09 4 Hrs. 30 Mins. 10:18

65-69 4 Hrs. 15 Mins. 9:44 4 Hrs. 45 Mins. 10:52

70-74 4 Hrs. 30 Mins. 10:18 5 Hrs. 00 Mins. 11:27

75-79 4 Hrs. 45 Mins. 10:52 5 Hrs. 15 Mins. 12:01

80 and up 5 Hrs. 00 Mins. 11:27 5 Hrs. 30 Mins. 12:35

To give you just a little idea of how far away I am personally away from this, I couldn’t qualify for the 80 year old division right now.

I know it’s a few months away, but all the training started months ago.

Good luck to all my marathon friends. Maybe when I turn 35 I can attempt it.
