Draft Day!

"I once caught a fish...this big."

“I once caught a fish…this big.”

I think I’ve mentioned on more than one occasion that this is one of my favorite days in the NFL calendar. Well, it used to be. I find it loathsome that they pushed the draft all the way back to Thursday night. When they pushed it to Friday night for the first round it was sucky but the new format is a completely different league of suck.

It’s not going to change so really there’s no reason to keep bitching but Saturday at noon was really the best. You could just get together with you buds, fire up the BBQ, and do nothing but watch the draft for like 8 hours.

Onto this year’s draft and specifically the Patriots draft.

Best rumor I’ve heard is that the Pats have kept a decent amount open in the cap because they’re going to unload the house tonight for Larry Fitzgerald. If that happens (remember one of our Dartmouth readers predicted it) I will be so relaxed and somehow excited at the same time.

Wide receiver at this point is the only position of true need on the team right now. They need a receiver that can stretch the field. No offense to the free agents they brought in, but I don’t think those guys can do it. So really if they’re not trading for Fitzy, they should draft a wideout in the first round. Since Bill has never drafted one in his tenure here in the first round we shouldn’t hold our breaths. But last year he traded up twice in the draft and he hadn’t done that in his tenure either.

Besides wideout the Pats really don’t have any glaring holes. They can always use pass rush and secondary help. Some rumors are they’re looking at defensive lineman that they can groom to replace Wilfork.

All this being said, I think they’re trading down. And of course I’ll stay up till 11:30 or so to see them do it. But they surprised us last year, maybe they do the same this year.

But Would The Pats?

20130131-051841.jpg

Yesterday Baltimore Ravens safety Ed Reed was asked about playing for the New England Patriots. His response was this:

“Yeah, oh yeah, man, I could definitely play for coach Belichick,”Reed responded. “He is a great coach. I’m sure he can help me to expand my football knowledge even more as a player and as a coach, so if I’m ever able to be around him, just like I was at the Pro Bowl, it’s huge.

“It’s the reason why I wear my sweater cut off a little bit. He’s the first guy I saw like, ‘That’s cool.’ You know, that’s cool. He cuts those sweater sleeves, and he’ll be comfortable. So there’s a reason why. Most people will tell you around the facility that’s how I look. It’s just a blessing to even have met, to know coach Belichick.”

Thanks to BlackSportsOnline for the quote.

The man love has been well documented. But would the Pats go after Reed? They’ve developed Devin McCourty to be that free safety. He’s not in the same league as an even aging Reed but would bringing in Reed derail his progression?

I like Felger’s idea of bringing in Bernard Pollard. He’s definitely an upgrade over Gregory and Chung. In fact my bold prediction is Chung won’t be back. Another wasted high second round pick. The team already cut ties with Ron Brace, so Chung wouldn’t shock me.

Some will say to just have McCourty and Reed both out there playing safety but they’re both free safeties. If you think that’s how the league is trending and you don’t need a strong safety, go for it.

My one fear is Belichick’s last Pro Bowl man crush, Chad Ochocinco. I’d hate for Reed to be a bust. But it’d be interesting to say the least having him back there hopefully solidifying the Pats defense.

Uh Oh

We’ll start with the obvious. I love a blowout. I love when I pick against the Pats with the spread and I’m wrong. There’s even a part of me that likes that I started Andrew Luck against the Pats and watched as they picked him off three times (Talib and the two rookies Wilson and Dennard) returning two of them for touchdowns (Talib and Dennard).

I like my theory of Talib showing up in the lockroom, friending Edelman, then giving him some adderall before the game. How else do you explain the David Patten-esque 222 yard performance including a 47 year yard rush, a hand full of receptions with a score and the big one, his punt returns of 49 and 68 yards? Oh and he scored on the 68 yarder. He would have on the 49 yarder but the punter nabbed him.

All great story lines along with an improved, not great, pass defense.

Now the bad news…

20121119-053451.jpg

I saw Gronkowski leaving the field but just figured his day was done. Maybe a minor tweak of something and better for him to get working on his injury.

Or not.

Gronkowski has a broken forearm and is expected to miss some serious time. So for all that we poked fun at Bill for stockpiling tight ends, seems like a smart move now with both Gronkowski and Hernandez sidelined with injuries.

But should Gronkowski have even been out there? I mean the game was well at hand at that point. Why not let Shianco get some reps.

Bottom line is it’s a massive blow to the league’s top offense. Now we hope and pray Gronk is back quickly and ready for the playoffs. Short week with the Jets on Thursday night.

Finally to the fans booing Adam Vinatieri, shame on you. You’re looking at empty trophy cases without him. Always remember that.

How’d It Go Down?

20121009-054109.jpg

“…kind of nice to stick it in Bill’s face once in a while.”
Wes Welker Sunday night on CSNNE

And with that quote once again the Boston media is coming with their pitchforks after Wes Welker. Sure he clarified Monday that it was a joke and he and Bill have a great relationship. But the media’s already coming.

So what happened?

Welker signed his franchise tag almost immediately. He didn’t hold out. He wasn’t a malcontent. He showed up to camp on time.

Do you think his agent stopped taking Belichick’s calls? Did his agent thumb his nose at a three year $21 million offer that the team may have put on the table?

Did Welker or his agent think they’d go to the mat with the Pats and win? Did they think that multiyear deal was going to be there on the last day they could have worked out a deal and it wasn’t?

Really at the end of the day, Welker is here and playing under the franchise tag which is the way the NFL rules are set up. Yet the media has been goading him since week one and even training camp to bash Bill and the organization.

Wes finally bites in jest and they’re all over him. Pathetic.

If I’m Wes I cancel the rest of my CSN appearances this year and just play football. The media’s against him and I don’t get why.

$50K Later

20120927-070437.jpg

So there’s the old question, if a tree falls in the wood and no one is there, does it make a sound?

If there were never replacement officials would Bill Belichick’s wallet be $50K lighter after grabbing the official after last Sunday night’s game?

I mean it’s really just a drop in the hat for him and thank God he wasn’t suspended for it. We’ve seen how well the Saints have played (0-3) without their head coach. So it could be worse.

The good news of course is that the NFL and the officials agreed to an eight year deal last night. Meaning tonight’s Ravens/Browns game will have real refs and so will the rest of the games going forward this season.

No reparations for the Pats that could be 3-0 after some questionable replacement official’s calls. But I’m not going to be a baby about it. If they’d played better earlier in these games it wouldn’t come down to field goals at the end.

Here’s hoping that order will be restored now and we can get back to enjoying football without these zebras distracting us.
