Breaking It Up Already?

20121220-052030.jpg

Taking a break from the Sox and Pats today to focus on the only Garden team playing this year (so far), the Celtics. I know I’ve neglected them, but really there hasn’t been much to talk about. They’re floating in mediocrity just a game over .500 and the talk yesterday was all about breaking up the band.

The best and biggest pipe dream trade I heard was Avery Bradley, Brandon Bass and Jeff Green to Utah for Al Jefferson. As it was pointed out, the trade couldn’t happen till probably January and you’d be trading those guys for half year rental in Jefferson. Plus if you’re Utah, why on Earth do you make that deal?

Even with Ray Allen gone, the C’s are old. Garnett and Pierce are old. At this point in their careers they should be bench players on championship teams, not guys you’re trying to get 40 minutes out of a night.

Jeff Green is terrible. Sorry you had a heart thing last year but the C’s way overpaid at $10 million per for four years. The way he’s played so far you just hope you’ll be able to dump the contract in a package with Bradley. Bradley and Bass are attractive pieces for a club looking to makea deal, Danny would need to be shrewd to get the team to take Green’s deal.

The bottom line is, they’re not going to win this year. Sure they’ll get in the playoffs, most teams do. But as constructed they aren’t a contender (no idea why Vegas wouldn’t take money on the C’s when I was out there). Danny needs to pull a Garnett type deal out of his ass to try and offset the awful Perkins deal. Then maybe, and still only a maybe, the team will make a run.

So yes, Danny, please break up the band.

KG Coming Back?

Is Kevin Garnett coming back to the Celtics? Is he going to retire?

Well that’s what we’d really like to know. I think Danny Ainge would as well. Ainge was interviewed yesterday and spoke about KG. He indicated that Garnett retiring was certainly on the table.

This is what I think is going on.

Garnett certainly feels that he can play another season and possibly more. But I don’t think that he wants to come back to a shitty team. I think he wants to see what kind of team is going to be built around him before he makes that decision.

We know that Ray Allen is as good as gone. It’s been reported all season that he would leave after this year. The emergence of Avery Bradley last year makes Allen more than expendable.

Is not having Ray there going to influence Garnett’s decision? Possibly. I think the bigger player influencing his decision would be Brandon Bass. Like I told you last week, Bass has opted out of his contract and is testing the free agent waters. With no Bass does that mean Garnett moves back to the four? His career resurgence this past season was because he moved to the five. Would the C’s target a center in free agency if they’re not able to bring Bass back and then move Garnett back to the four? Would he want that?

The one player not going anywhere, I think, would be Paul Pierce. He has the nostalgia factor. He was drafted by the team, and is the captain. I don’t think that he would want to move him. But would you? Personally if I’m getting younger at the same position by a decade, I’m pulling the trigger. Thanks for the memories but I want a winning team.

So it will be interesting to see if the Celtics can bring KG back and like I said, if he wants to. They’re going to hopefully have more draft night magic like they did the night they brought in Ray Allen from the Sonics. That was the first domino in getting KG to Boston. I’m hoping Danny has more magic on deck.

A New Series?

I’m pretty sure everyone will be saying the same thing. If Lebron wasn’t such a wuss and if Wade hit that last second three, we’re having a completely different discussion this morning.

Let’s back up a bit.

Friday as we’re sitting at Buffalo Wild Wings, we said that there needs to be some support from the bench. We were saying that the C’s can’t have Rondo playing 53 minutes a game (plus OT). We needed the bench to wake up and contribute.

Needless to say Friday we were high fiving and praising Dooling and Daniels. Two guy we thought we’d never have anything good to say about them. Two guys that really helped make sure that the starters were able to rest. By keeping their lead with the starters on the bench, there wasn’t a sense of urgency for Doc to rush the starters back in the game. Celtics win and it was a 2-1 series.

Without Avery Bradley I didn’t think the Celtics would win this series. Heading into the playoffs I absolutely thought the C’s could win the series. They had already won in Miami in the regular season and kicked the shit of the Heat at home.

Again, no Bradley, I didn’t think they could win the series.

Back to last night and let’s skip ahead to the third quarter. The Celtics lead was slipping away (it was as high as 18). The refs must have gotten a call from the league office at the half because in the blink of an eye the Celtics had both Peirce and Rondo with four fouls and headed to the bench. A five point lead heading into the fourth.

Ugh…

I know I spoke to this last week, but I hate when you’ve had a long weekend and you’re in desperate need of sleep but you emotionally invest in a game and then you can’t sleep. You have to stick it out.

That’s what happened last night.

So the Celtics lose the lead at the start of the fourth and I’m regretting not rolling over and falling asleep like in game two. They volley back and forth in the fourth and the C’s are clinging to a three point lead with less than a minute. I’m thinking OK defense, clamp down. They clamped a little but Lebron nailed a three to tie the game with it looking like the C’s getting the last shot.

Then the officials remembered their phone call from the half and whistle KG for an offensive foul with 21 seconds left in the game. At that point the boys should just be playing, no? It felt like the Sixers game when he was whistled for an offensive foul with 10 seconds left in the game.

Like I said at the top, Lebron doesn’t want that last shot. He doesn’t have it in him. So he dishes to Haslem who didn’t have a clean look and they miss. Headed to overtime again.

Ugh, I should have gone to sleep.

Or not. I didn’t expect the Heat to be as cold as the C’s from the field. With the C’s clinging to a two point lead Wade puts up a three for the win that he missed. Celtics win and the series is tied at two. The Celtics were able to hold the Heat to two points in the OT. They didn’t do much better scoring four, but so long as you’re scoring more than the other team, a win is a win.

They head back to Miami Tuesday night. I’m not jumping on the C’s able to win this series, I’m just happy they’ve made it a series. I expect Miami to win at home Tuesday but if somehow the C’s could steal game five. Wouldn’t a game six in Boston be amazing for the series win?

We’ll have to wait and see.

Year In Review: Celtics

Part three of four.

The Celtics had a very interesting 2010. It started with them playing .500 basketball for pretty much the second half of the season. It looked like they just were on cruise control and hoping that their dominance in the first half of the year would be enough to carry them into the playoffs.

We all know what happened. They became a team possessed. After beating the Heat 4-1 in the opening series (a series many thought would have given the C’s problems) they faced Lebron and the Cavs. A match-up that many thought the Celtics would lose. After all Lebron and the Cavs were coming off another season where they had the best record in the Eastern Conference.

Once again the Celtics showed up to play and beat Lebron and the Cavs 4-2 in what proved to be the last games Lebron would play as a Cavalier. That set up the Celtics to face the Magic in the Eastern Conference Finals. A series that at this point you thought the Celtics would have a chance but would likely go seven games. It went six, C’s win 4-2.

That set up a rematch of the 2008 NBA Championship against the Lakers. A series that I still think the Celtics would have won if Perkins didn’t get hurt. But instead they blew game seven allowing the Lakers to rule the boards.

Then there was the questions. Would Ray Allen leave? Would Pierce opt out? Would Doc leave? Would Rasheed Wallace retire? How long would Perkins be out?

Well, Doc committed to the team, Ray re-signed, Pierce opted out so he could re-sign, and Rasheed “retired. I use the quotes because I still don’t think he’s handed in his paperwork.

The Celtics used their mid-level exemption to bring in Jermaine O’Neal’s corpse. They also brought in Shaq for the league minimum, re-signed Nate Robinson, and brought back Delonte West. They also drafted Avery Bradley and Luke Harangody (to replace Brian Scalabrine as the token white guy on the team) to help fill out the roster. With Perkins out and the O’Neals basically signed to fill his spot until he returns it was interesting that Semih Erden made the team.

They took their loss in the Finals and made it fuel for the 2010-2011 season. They came out of the gate strong beating the new look Heat with Lebron, Wade, and Chris Bosh. But they went out the next night and took a dump in Cleveland. At that point many wondered if in fact the team was too old and back to back games would be the team’s undoing.

Not so fast.

In fact the team was sporting one of the best records in the NBA as the year was winding down. 23-4 before dropping three of four in the final week of the year to start the season at 24-7.

Last year’s team coasted the second half of the season and finished 50-32. I don’t foresee a similar fate for this team, but it could happen. I’m thinking that they’ll make it to the Eastern Conference Finals at least. If they can get through Miami in the Finals (assuming everyone’s healthy) I don’t think banner 18 is a pipe dream.
