“My best friend’s sister’s boyfriend’s brother’s girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who’s going with the girl who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it’s pretty serious.”
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
And that’s how rumors start.
I think we’re much more advanced in the age of technology. We now have front office people leaking stuff to reporters as “unnamed sources within the organization”. You have agents leaking stuff to reporters too and of course the reporters tell all while protecting their sources. But they’re all out there trying to scoop each other to be the first one to report on something.
So I found it very funny that in the 10 minutes I got to listen to sports radio yesterday a guy called in and said, “My buddy works over at one of the restaurants near Fenway and one of the guys that works for the Sox came in for lunch. He said Youkilis is as good as gone.”
Nice.
There’s a ton of merit in that too. Go back and read it in Mazz’s Boston guy voice, funny right.
But on a serious note, the best rumor page I’ve found is www.mlbtraderumors.com. These guys really stay on top of all that’s happening. They get their stuff from Twitter, Sports Illustrated, ESPN, and they even have their own guys out there working.
So as for our restaurant guy. Turns out the market for Youkilis isn’t what Sox fans were hoping. The Reds just got Scott Rolen back from injury so you can cross off a home town return. The Diamondbacks were very interested but didn’t want to give up one of their top prospects in the deal. But now that the Sox have indicated that they’ll eat Youk’s salary team’s that are strapped for cash are coming out of the woodwork. The Diamondbacks are said to be back in play along with the White Sox, Dodgers, Indians, and Pirates.
Like I’ve said before, getting rid of his attitude in the clubhouse should take out some of the toxic-ness (despite all the players saying it’s not toxic yesterday). But will also clean out the log jam of corner infielders. With Youk gone Middlebrooks can play everyday at third and Gonzalez can stop pouting about having to play the outfield, and maybe start hitting when he’s your everyday first baseman.
Then all the team has to do is start trading out some of these starting pitchers (cough, cough, Beckett). Then the team might be likable again. Might be anyways.
