Your Boston Red Sox have managed to get themselves back to .500. And there was much rejoicing.
What’s great is that even at .500 the team is still in last place in the division. They have the same record as the Tigers who I picked to beat everyone and a much better record than the Angels who at 8-15 sit at the bottom of their division too. Pujols, their great off-season acquisition, is batting .217 with no homers and a whopping four RBIs a month into the season.
I’m just saying that nothing is written in stone after a month of baseball.
One thing is though. Kevin Youkilis’s inability to stay healthy. I said it in the off-season that this was one of the guys that needed to be dealt. Since his move to third he’s not been able to make it through an entire season. He was scratched in the last game in Chicago and was a late scratch again yesterday against Oakland.
You’re telling me there’s really no market for this guy?
I read Moneyball long before the movie came out. In it, Billy Beane tries his hardest to get Boston to give up Youkilis. He was the one that dubbed him the Greek God of Walks (even though Youk is Jewish). He tried to get Boston to flip Youk to Oakland in 2002 when the Sox had made their trade for Cliff Floyd. He was desperate to add him but just couldn’t get the Sox to part with him.
Now a decade later you’re telling me that Beane still isn’t a little interested? I mean, Youk’s OBP is what Beane covets above everything else. There aren’t Beane disciples littered all over MLB that wouldn’t want this guy?
All I know is with the attitude and the injuries (not to mention the sweating and the face forest) I’m all set with him. It’s clear the team isn’t willing to move Beckett, so why not put feelers out there and see what you can get for this guy. The heir apparent Will Middlebrooks is tearing the cover off the ball in Pawtucket batting .348 so far this season.
Move Youk for some prospects, let Middlebrooks learn in the bigs and hopefully it will start to change the bad aura that’s surrounded this team since last year.
Or just keep everything the same and keep me disliking the team.
