Finally Gone

The worst kept secret was finally announced late Friday night. We knew it had to come on a day off from the World Series and it did. Theo Epstein has left the Sox and will be the president of the Cubs.

Theo took out a full page ad in the Globe yesterday thanking the fans, players, ownership and Francona.

I’ve said it since the end of the collapse at the end of September that I wanted him to go, so I’m happy to see him leave. I think the letter was a classy move.

What I don’t like was the press release on Friday. Lucchino’s prints were all over it. It’s a small part of the whole thing, but it irked me. They announced that Theo had resigned from the Red Sox. Uncle Larry had to make sure the press release was clear in telling the fans that Theo was leaving, he quit.

It couldn’t say that he was taking a better job for more money with the Cubs. Couldn’t say that he was heading to Chicago, nope. Uncle Larry had to make it sound as negative as possible that he was leaving the Sox. Quitting.

How long before the stories come out from “unnamed sources” that he was doing blow in his office? Or about the tens of thousands that he he spent on escorts with his company credit card? At this point I wouldn’t be surprised since it is Uncle Larry’s M.O. to trash anyone that leaves the organization.

Today or tomorrow we should get the press conferences where Ben Cherington will be named Sox GM, Jed (not Ned ESPN) Hoyer will be named Cubs GM, and Theo will be named Cubs president.

Tomorrow we tackle the John Farrell rumor as well as Joe Torre. Stay tuned.
