In a move to try and get my AZ buddy Steve into Celtics camp they took two Purdue guys in last night’s draft. They traded their rights to the #25 pick, Marshon Brooks, to New Jersey in exchange for JaJuan Johnson at #27 and grabbed a future second round pick from New Jersey. In the second round, #55 overall, they picked up another Purdue player E’Twaun Moore.
So who are these guys?
We’ll start with Johnson. He’s 6′ 10″, 220 lbs, and 22 years old. He projects as a PF in the NBA but you have to imagine that Danny may be thinking center. He has a 7′ 2″ wingspan. He averaged 20.5 points his senior year with 8.6 rebounds per game.
The fact that he played all four years in college, in my mind, makes him more likely to be NBA ready than a guy that did a one in done in college.
E’Twaun Moore is 6’4″, 191 lbs, and also 22 years old. He plays SG and projects the same in the NBA. He has a 6’9.5″ wingspan that should help him defensively. He averaged 18 points a game in his senior year at Purdue.
Both guys were part of a Purdue team that lost to VCU in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Johnson was the 5th best senior ranked in the draft and Moore was the 10th best.
Are these two guys the key to winning a championship? I say no.
But I really don’t think Danny is done. He went through the draft, didn’t make a major move on draft night but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have something up his sleeve.
I think similar to the Patriots not making huge decisions without a CBA, I think that Danny is in a similar mindset. Imagine if there is no hard cap in the NBA? Teams can spend what they want? I know it’s not likely but you know Wyc will go out and spend to make sure he has a championship team for years to come.
For now we wait. NHL draft tonight, back Monday with a recap.
