A whole bunch of sports happening this past weekend so let’s get right to it.
The Bruins clinched a playoff berth last night as they beat the best team in the east, the Flyers, last night 2-1. This came on the heals of them losing 1-0 Saturday afternoon to the Rangers. The Bruins did exactly what I was talking about Friday at work starting Tuukka Saturday against the Rangers and saving Thomas for Sunday at Philadelphia.
The Bruins clinched a playoff berth for their fourth consecutive year. A couple of notes from Sunday that seem very boding for the Bruins. Horton scored again, his 23rd, making the trading of Dennis Wideman look better and better. Claude also had Michael Ryder as a healthy scratch last night making many in the Black & Gold nation happy as Daniel Paille took his spot in the lineup. Let’s see if this sparks Ryder or if he’s a healthy scratch going forward and into the playoffs.
Speaking of playoffs, the Celtics are out of the top seed in the east and dropping. After dropping a close game to Charlotte Friday night the C’s find themselves this morning sitting two games behind the Bulls in the east and only a half game ahead of the Heat. They’re on a four game road swing that has them playing San Antonio and Atlanta on the tail end. The issue facing this elder C’s team is that tonight is the tail end of a back to back when they play Indiana and they have Thursday at the Spurs with a Hawks game the next night.
What this means is that at the end of this road trip the Celtics could find themselves sitting in the third seed in the east. They do not play well on back-to-back nights and their schedule heading down the stretch has them playing three more back-to-back games. I guess the only good thing is that when they play Chicago and Miami down the stretch is that they have both of them on the first night of the back-to-backs.
Then there’s the Red Sox. They’ve lost 10 straight in spring training. Their pitchers have been getting rocked including Clay giving up 11 runs on 11 hits in his last outing. They wrap up their spring schedule Wednesday at Houston before hitting Arlington for the regular season opener on Friday (more on that later this week).
And finally we have the Final Four. My brackets are busted. I didn’t get one correct team into the Final Four. But it’s looking like no one that signed up for the blog’s bracket challenge got anyone into the Final Four. A big congrats to Stew for leading the pack and winning this year’s Jay’s Sports Blog Bracket Challenge.
