Patriots Week One Preview

It’s a very happy time. After suffering through a summer with the Red Sox, the preseason garbage is finally over and we get to see football that actually counts.

Tom Brady got in a car accident yesterday morning at about 6:30 and reports came out rather quickly after that. It started with the reports of a two car accident then details started trickling in like the jaws of life were used at the scene. Patriots fans had their collective hearts skip a beat. Then more reports started to tell the whole story and Tom Brady was in Foxboro by the time the news got it straight.

So what happened exactly? Well, let’s get a little from our friends at Boston.com:

The driver, 21-year-old Ludgero Rodrigues of Brockton, who has a six-page record of driving infractions and license suspensions, was cited for running a red light. According to Registry of Motor Vehicles records, the driver of the minivan has a lengthy driving record, including a charge of drunken driving after a November 2009 crash in New Bedford. He was never found criminally responsible. Due to repeated infractions, he had already taken a driver safety class in 2008. His other violations included failure to use seat belts, failure to use child safety seats, driving an uninspected vehicle, driving without a license, and failure to signal, according to data provided by the Registry.

I’m sure a little “detective” work from the fine folks in the Boston Police Department would uncover that our friend Ludgero is in this country illegally. But it’s OK, Deval wants the illegals to have licenses.

So an illegal alien (yup, I’m jumping to that conclusion) crashes into the Patriots franchise quarterback’s car and shakes him up. Obviously Brady isn’t going to have some random doctor in Boston check him out who will probably leak to the press (which is illegal) any potential injury. Nope, he continued to Foxboro and was checked out by team medical staff and apparently was OK because he was at practice. Clearly Brady’s $78K (that’s an estimate) 2010 Audi A8 is going to keep him pretty safe opposed to a 13 year old Mercury Villager.

So Brady gets to Foxboro, participates in practice. Oh and he signed a little four year $72 million dollar contract extension. That’s just the extension for the 2011-2014 seasons. No indication of what the potential signing bonus is but I would venture a guess in the $26-$32 million range. This means Brady will be a Patriot for a long time.

On to the game.

Vegas has the Pats as a 4.5 point favorite at home with an over/under at 45. Personally I’m going to take the Pats and the under. Even with a suspect defense I think that Belichick game plans with the defensive guys he has and keeps the Cincinnati offense in check. Ochocinco has never had a huge game against the Pats and I expect that to continue.

Pats win 24-17.

Back Monday after my trip to Foxboro with a recap.
