My Brain Would Melt

It started with this one:

…then this one:

…and now rumors floating that it’ll be this one:

Yup another tight end in the first round for the New England Patriots. A few mock drafts are projecting that the Patriots will use their first round pick this year on a tight end. As the board falls they are presumed to get the #1 tight end on the board, in this year’s draft it’s Oklahoma’s Jermaine Gresham.

I think drafting a tight end when you have solid guys at every position is a smart move. I also understand that there are no tight ends on the active roster. But this isn’t the year to take a tight end with your first round pick. They proved last year just how ineffective the tight end is in their offensive scheme.

What the team needs to do is trade up for a shut down corner. Joe Haden out of Florida had a bad 40 time at the combine but is expected to have a better time at his pro day. He may have fallen out of the top 10 (the Browns were rumored at #7) so the Pats wouldn’t have to trade up as many spots to try and snag him. I’d much rather a corner, pass rusher, or running back with the first round pick.

As I’ve stated previously, they can’t trade out of the first round again this year. Unacceptable. They need to approach this draft with an aggressive plan. Trading up to get guys they’ve targeted opposed to standing pat and taking the best available player that falls to them.

There’s still over a month until the draft, but let’s get that tight end talk right out of the front office’s head. Like I said, another tight end and my brain would melt.
