No Coordinators?

With all the Super Bowl stuff going on a story was released that hasn’t been getting enough attention. Bill Belichick announced that he won’t name a defensive or offensive coordinator for next season.

So let me see if I understand this correctly. At the end of last season it was reported that Belichick needed people in the organization to challenge him on personal decisions. Charlie Weis and Romeo Crennel apparently would challenge his personnel decisions and weren’t afraid to say “no”. There’s no one there to do that now.

Now Belichick is the GM, Head Coach, OC and DC. Who on Earth is going to challenge him? I think the Krafts have really dropped the ball on this whole thing. Giving him the GM spot has proven to be not so great after Scott Pioli left. Sure he has Nick Caserio and Floyd Reese to help but we all know that Belichick is the man with final say on the whole thing.

I think that getting an offensive coordinator like Mike Martz would have been a good decision. I didn’t like him as a head coach but if the Pats are adamant that they’re going to rely on the passing offense more than the running game that helped them win three championships, Martz is the guy to ignite the offense. He has creative play calling and would mix up the very vanilla Patriots offense. Instead he’s with the Bears. I know, the Bears.

On the defensive side, the team should have pushed for Romeo. He knows the defensive scheme and was the helmsman for the championship years. He too wasn’t a great head coach but knows Belichick’s system and knows how to motivate. I think that he would have been a very smart pick up too. Instead he’s with the Chiefs. Ugh…

At this point it’s been five years since a Super Bowl win in Foxboro and all that “In Bill We Trust” is finally starting to get questioned. The ego seems to be too large at this point. Hopefully I’m proven wrong next season but if not, we’ll know part of the reason.
