I’m sure like most people I wasn’t the only one watching Wakefield’s return last night. How’s seven innings of one run ball? Good enough for me.
Clinging to a one run lead, Ramon Ramirez gave up the game tying home run. I wasn’t worried but kind of bummed out that the Wakefield lost out on the win. Then Josh Bard came in with a runner on third and two outs. He then proceeded to pop 100 MPH on the radar gun and strike out Jim Thome. Seeing the 100 MPH fast ball after the knuckleball for seven innings I have to imagine it’s pretty tough to catch up.
After a quiet bottom of the eighth and another clean inning from Josh Bard in the top of the ninth the Sox were set to bat in the bottom of the ninth. Youk, Ortiz and Bay set to bat. If there’s going to be a walk off, anyone of these three guys could easily make it happen.
Youk strikes out and that brings up David Ortiz. I don’t know if it’s David Ortiz that came in a time machine from 2004 or something but an event happened that hasn’t happened since September 2007. David Ortiz hit a walk off home run. Yup. Big Papi. It was like the aforementioned scene in Elf. I know him! That’s the Papi we all know and love.
Sox win, Rangers lose. Sox up 2.5 games in the Wild Card, down six in the division. One more against the White Sox tonight and then the Blue Jays in over the weekend.
