A-Roid Should Go Away

You’d think that after a night that Jonathan Van Every gave the Red Sox a win with a 10th inning home run I would lead with that. Nope. Celtics hoping to close out their first round series tonight? Nope. Once again more about the scandalous A-Roid.

Here’s the highlights from a story off ESPN.com:

• Yankees teammates, Roberts writes, nicknamed Rodriguez “Bitchh Tits” in 2005 because he put on 15 pounds in the offseason which included round pectorals, a condition called gynecomastia that can be caused by anabolic steroids.

• Rodriguez put on 25 pounds of muscle between his sophomore and junior years. Former high school teammates told Roberts (the reporter that wrote the book that broke the steroid use) that A-Rod was using steroids back then and his coach knew it.

• A-Rod “pitch tipped” when he played for the Rangers by letting opponents at the plate know which pitch was coming in lopsided games. A-Rod expected players he helped would reciprocate when he was having an off night and needed to get his batting average up.

• A-Rod was hated at Hooters, where he tipped the minimum 15 percent.

Just more dirt piled on this piece of shit. He should pack it up, take his money and go home Mark McGuire style. Everyone know that if you go to Hooters you always tip better than that.

Bruins Finally Get to Play Again

the_big_lebowski_jesus-resize-copy

“You ready to be fucked, man? I see you rolled your way into the semis.”
-Jesus Quintana – The Big Lebowski

So after what feels like a month without the Bruins they finally have a second round opponent and it’s the Carolina Hurricanes. The Bruins went 4-0-0 against the Hurricanes this season and I predict the same in the playoffs .The B’s outscored them like 19-8 in the regular season and even with a week and a half off, I say the Bruins sweep the ‘Canes.

Draft Day Part II

So yesterday I covered the first two rounds. Let’s keep going with the third through the seventh. This is a long one so you may want to sit down with a drink and/or snack.

The Pats started the day with four third round picks, and one each in the fifth through seventh rounds. They immediately started with the dealing getting a second round pick next year and a seventh round pick in ’09 from the Jaguars for the 73rd overall pick.

Ten picks later the Patriots on the board selected Brandon Tate, WR from North Carolina. He’s coming off an injury but could prove to be a long term #3 after Galloway’s one year deal is up. Here’s the scouting report from ESPN.com:

Tate brings excellent versatility. He can contribute immediately in the return game, shows excellent fluidity as a route-runner and is at his best catching the ball in the open field. However, we have concerns with the fact that Tate’s coming off a major knee injury.

The Pats then dealt the 89th pick to the Titans for another second round pick next year. That makes a three second rounders for the Pats next year. Very smart maneuvering by Belichick and the early takes are that the draft board is much deeper next year than it was this year.

With the 97th pick in the draft, the compensatory pick for Asante Samuel, the Pats chose Tyrone McKenzie LB from South Florida via Iowa State via Michigan State. He played outside but could be the long term replacement for Tedi Bruschi when he finally retires. Here’s the scouting report from ESPN.com:

McKenzie reads his keys, locates the ball quickly and tackles well. He also shows good range and awareness in zone coverage. The biggest concern we have with him is that he doesn’t have great top-end speed, so he’s going to have a problems matching up with tight ends and backs in man coverage. He also lacks great ball skills.

About 1:15 in the afternoon the Ellis Hobbs trade was announced. The Pats getting two fifth rounders for their #1 CB who Eli so graciously pointed is pretty much a #3 on any other team. They then sent those two picks to Baltimore for a fourth and sixth rounder. With the fourth round pick they started beefing up the offensive line with Richard Ohrnberger a guard from Penn State. Here’s the scouting report thanks to ESPN.com:

Ohrnberger is a mauler who plays with an aggressive attitude and works very hard to finish his blocks. However, he’s limited athletically and will struggle with quicker interior defensive linemen.

The team then grabbed their third offensive lineman of the draft in the fifth round with the 170th overall pick, George Bussey an offensive tackle from Louisville. This was yet another compensatory selection that couldn’t be traded. Here’s the Scouting Report:

Bussey possesses good strength upstairs. However, he fails to deliver a violent punch. He also shows some inconsistency with his footwork in pass protection, which creates some concern to his ability to prevent quicker defensive ends from turning the corner.

Bill and Co. then made an interesting choice in the 6th round with the 198th overall choice. The Pats selected a long snapper from Hawaii, Jacob Ingram. The Scouting report is very promising especially after the Pats lost Lonie Paxton to the Broncos via free agency:

We believe Ingram is the best long-snapper who has come out in the past three years. His zip and accuracy are the two main reasons he was drafted.

Keeping with their beefing up of the defensive line, they picked another D-Tackle at #207. This time it was Myron Pryor from Kentucky. With a bunch of guys with expiring deals on both sides of the ball, these picks are really starting to make sense. Here’s the Scouting report:

Pryor possesses excellent lower-body strength and plays with low pad level, which allows him to create excellent leverage in the interior. However, we have concerns about overall durability; he wears down throughout the course of a game.

With their first pick in the 7th round they took former QB turned WR Julian Edelman from Kent State. Since they missed out on QB Pat White from VA Tech I can see this guy being the same type of Wildcat option at quarterback. We’ll see. Here’s the scouting report:

Edleman, a former QB, displays excellent athleticism. He will need some time to develop, learning how to run routes and create separation.

The Final pick produced the third defensive lineman in the draft for the Pats in Georgia Tech defensive tackle Darryl Richard. Here’s the report:

Richard plays with great effort and uses his hands extremely well. However, his lateral movement is adequate at best and he will struggle to anchor on the interior.

Needless to say they addressed their needs in the draft. I really think that by not getting a DE/OLB in the first round it’s a clear indication that Jason Taylor is in the mix. Robert Kraft says you can have a spot on the roster, you take the opportunity. If I’m going with a draft grade strictly on the draft (not the two 2nd rounders for next year) I give the team an A. The team has no glaring needs, having addressed the secondary issues in free agency as well as the WR depth. I say the Pats are the team to beat this coming year. No doubt.

Almost Perfect Sports Weekend

We’ll get the bad out of the way first. The Celtics couldn’t take two in Chicago and are heading back to Boston tied at two. Seems like just a year ago they had a similar situation as the Hawks really gave them a run for their money.

Now on to better news.

The trivia question that hadn’t changed for years was, “Who was the last Red Sox player to steal home plate?”. The answer was Billy Hatcher. Well, that changed last night as Jacoby stole home off Andy Pettitte. Justin Masterson got the win and is sporting a 2.70 ERA. He’s been fantastic with Dice-K on the DL. So good that you almost don’t want Dice-K back if he keeps this up. Sox sweep the series and have now won 10 games in a row. They’re playing good baseball and even when they’re down 6-0 they’re not out of it. Next up is Cleveland and hopefully when the series is over, the Sox are back atop the division.

Now the NFL Draft. Unlike years past I was not able to sit and watch round by round. The weather was a huge factor on Sunday and Saturday I had a gig. So in Friday’s column I said to watch out for Darius Butler (CB Connecticut) and Patrick Chung (safety, Oregon) and who did the Pats draft. You got it, those same two players. The interesting part was how the team got there.

The Pats traded down from 23 where some Mock Drafts had them getting Butler out of UCONN. They traded the pick for a fifth rounder and the 26th pick in the draft. When they came up at 26, they traded again. This time packaging the fifth they just acquired and the 26 for two thirds and a second. At that point the Patriots had traded completely out of the first round. No linebacker/defensive end combo, no corner, no tight end, no Logan Mankins surprise pick.

So at 34, the pick the Pats got for Matt Cassel, the Patriots selected Patrick Chung the safety from Oregon. Look for him to replace Rodney Harrison. The team then packaged the 47th overall, 124, and 199 (the same number pick they took Tom Brady with) to the Raiders for the 40th pick in the draft. The Pats then had back to back picks.

The 40th pick was used to select nose tackle Ron Brace of Boston College. A great pick with Wilfork and Seymour both having contracts set to expire and the team not likely to afford resigning both. They selected Butler with the 41st pick. They must be very high on him because they traded Ellis Hobbs on day two for a couple fifth round picks.

Finally to close the second round they addressed the offensive line drafting Houston offensive lineman Sebastian Vollmer. If this guy is the real deal, he should take over one of the tackle spots and move one of the tackles to guard. Again, long term thought with this pick with Light and Mankins both having expiring deals soon.

Back tomorrow with the third through seventh picks.

Sports Overload Weekend

I’m going to start with saying it’s great that the Bruins have won and can rest this weekend. It’s one less sport crowding up this full sporting schedule this weekend.

So Sox vs. Yanks. Do you care as much as you did five or six years ago? I don’t. I just view it as another game on the schedule. Stop hyping it. Seriously. It’s the game of the week on FOX Saturday and of course the ESPN game of the week Sunday Night. Enough already. We get it. New York is near Boston, the two teams fight for free agent prizes, both teams have more money than they know what to do with. Yay! It was much more exciting when it was the Dirt Dog Red Sox a team of misfits and castoffs knocking of the rich, powerful Yankees. Now the Sox buy whatever they want just like the neighbors to the south. Whoo hoo.

Anyways. As the first pitch is being thrown on Saturday, the NFL Draft will be kicking off. The Pats have 6 of the first 97 picks. There’s tons of rumors floating out there from the Pats shipping their first round pick to Carolina for Julius Peppers to them packaging the first round pick with a second to move up in the draft. This is my favorite off season day in the NFL. If the Peppers deal doesn’t happen (highly unlikely) and the Dolphins take a DE/OLB look for the Pats to address other needs. That’ll be a sure sign that Jason Taylor isn’t heading back to South Beach and will likely be a Patriot. Larry English OLB/DE, Brian Cushing ILB, Darius Butler CB are names expected to fall to the Pats. In the second round Donald Brown (RB, Connecticut), Patrick Chung (safety, Oregon), and Pat White (QB, Virginia Tech) who would play WR/KR are all on the Pats radar.

Then Sunday the third round of the draft kicks off at 10AM. The Celtics tip off at 1PM leading the Bulls 2-1 in the series after a 21 point blow out win last night hoping to take a 3-1 lead before heading back to the Garden on Tuesday. And like I said, Sunday night will wrap up with Joe Morgan on ESPN and Sox vs. Yankees. A weekend chock full of sports and also good weather. Can’t wait. Back Monday with a draft recap.
