Another Ring For Brady

I wake up this morning and turn on the news and find out the Tom Brady got married. Awesome. So if he’s caught out to dinner with his wife, will people finally let it be?

Now onto the real ring that we want Tom to get. The next Super Bowl ring. There’s been a lot of surprising free agents hitting the market and with Cassel on the cap it’s going to be tough for the Pats to be players for the marquee free agents but let’s check out some of the names.

Fred Taylor RB
This is the most likely signing by the Patriots. This guy has quietly been an awesome back for all his 11 years in the league. At this point in his career he’s certainly not a feature back, but would be a great tandem back with Sammy Morris, or Sandyvagititus Maroney. He actually is rumored to have visited the Pats on Wednesday or Thursday. I’m on board with this signing especially since Maroney is such a puss.

Cato June LB
You remember him. He was the linebacker on the Colts that used to reek havoc on the Patriots. Well, he went to the Bucs as a free agent and hasn’t been heard from since, but this guy would be a great addition to an aging linebacker corps. He’s only 29 and would be a much better addition than bringing back Colvin or Seau. I’d like to see him in a Pats uniform but I’d rather.

Derrick Brooks LB
This guy would be a Seau-esque signing, but a little younger. Imagine having him and Bruschi/Vrabel in the middle with Mayo and Thomas on the outside. This guy will be 36 when he starts the season, but he’s an All Pro that has anchored the Bucs defense for years including their Super Bowl win. I’d love to see him in a Pats uniform.

Laveranues Coles
The only reason I put him on here is because I’d really like to see him lining up opposite of Randy Moss. Coles and Moss on the outside with Welker in the slot. What a great wedding present for Tom Brady. This guy would be 100% better than Jabar “Drops” Gaffney.

If anything the free agent period will be interesting. The sooner the team can dump Cassel the more money the team will free up for free agents. Get the Vikings on the phone and get this guy a Greyhound ticket. The other option is Philly. McNabb won’t sign an extension, dump his ass and bring in Cassel. Time will tell.

The Sox Are Back

So a night when the Celtics lose to LA (no not the Lakers, the Clippers!) I still wake up in a good mood. Why? Because I was asleep before the Celtics even tipped off and because I got to watch live baseball last night. Yes ladies and gentleman the Sox are back (so the headline says).

Twins Red Sox Spring Baseball

Unless you’re a big fan of the Mayor’s Cup race, you probably have no vested interest in the Sox losing to the Twins last night. That’s not the point. Well, they beat BC 7-1 for reference. That’s not the point either. The point is that Spring Training baseball games have started and now we can start catching up with our favorite boys of summer. Your 2008 MVP Dustin Pedroia, face forest Kevin Youkilis, speedy center fielder that can’t get on base Jacoby Ellsbury, new resident old man, innings eater Tim Wakefield. It’s great to see the Sox back in action.

I’ll have an in depth breakdown of the whole baseball season closer to the start of the regular season, but if you read my 2009 Predictions column, you already know how it’s gonna end.

Just A Matter Of Time?

So the Celtics looking for depth in the front court signed Mikki Moore yesterday. But the bigger news is that the Knicks finally reached a buyout agreement with Stephon Marbury clearing the way for him to sign with another team. In this case everyone in the league believes that team is the Celtics.

So last year it was Alien Head Cassel and PJ Brown before the rosters had to be set. This year it’s looking like Moore and Marbury are the two headed to town. I’m still holding out on Joe Smith but that looks like it’s not going to happen, for the Celtics anyways. There’s possible collusion afoot in the NBA with the Thunder (who?) and Cavaliers GM’s in bed together. Rumor has it that Joe Smith still may be bought out and only the Cavs GM was told of the pending move that’s why Cleveland didn’t even bother trying to get Moore.

Paul Pierce and Ray Allen have both said that the chemistry in the locker room is so tight that bringing in an alleged cancer like Marbury wouldn’t rock the boat with this team. I’d like to think with guys like those two and Garnett in the locker room that nothing would be tolerated. Time will tell, but this is looking like a team poised for greatness again.

No KG, No Problem

Celtics Nuggets Basketball

This one went on past my bedtime so I missed the second half, but seriously when your team is up 33 at the half do you really have to watch the second half? They ended up blowing out Denver on the road 114-76. So much for my thinking that Denver (who beat the C’s in Boston) on the road was going to be “tough”.

The only moment of fear I had was when Scal got knocked down in the first quarter. He looked like a prize fighter getting back up, looking very dazed. Without KG already, the C’s can’t afford to get any thinner in their front court.

The Celtics are rumored to be the front runners for the services of seven footer Mikki Moore. Who? That’s what I said. Well, judging from the picture on NBA.com we see he has Predator dreads which is great in an NFL defensive backfield, but how does that translate to the NBA? Apparently to 3.5 points a game and 3.3 rebounds a game. Serviceable off the bench I suppose so long as he’s not turning the ball over and is decent defensively (something Patrick O’Bryant lacked).

I’d much rather Joe Smith than Moore but the rumor now is that Smith may not get bought out of his contract. Well, if he did, I’d drop Moore and pick up Smith. Then there’s still the whole Marbury thing, set to have a hearing today which could lead to a buyout. Smith and Marbury to the team that already has the big three would make the C’s unstoppable.

Raging Rajon

The Bruins and Celtics were both in action yesterday, one had success, the other didn’t. Let’s concentrate on the good. Your Boston Celtics.

Celtics Suns Basketball

More specifically we’ll talk about the birthday boy, Rajon Rondo. Yesterday was Rondo’s 23rd birthday and boy did he have a good day. I tuned in a little late (about half way through the second quarter) and was pleasantly surprised to hear Rajon nail a three as the shock clock was expiring. That’s when the radio guys informed me that not only was it Rajon’s birthday, but that he was blowing up. In fact the whole team was blowing up almost putting up 70 (68 for reference) in the first half.

Rondo ended the game with a game high and career high 32 points. He also added 10 assists and six rebounds just to help fill out the stat sheet. The Celtics ended the Suns run of three straight 140+ wins and really dominated from midway through the second all the way to the end. Did we mention this is all without Kevin Garnett?

Sure the Suns are setting in the West (great play on words no?) and aren’t as good as they once were, but still this has to feel good to win a nationally televised game on the road without KG. Now they have a tougher task facing the Nuggets tonight. Let’s see how Rajon plays coming off such a high yesterday. Hopefully he continues to play out of his mind, stepping it up while KG is out and the C’s keep that #1 seed in the East.
