Give ‘em Peyton Face

So this weekend the Pats return to prime time for the third time in four weeks. I mean seriously, the schedule makers deserve to have their balls dipped in raw meat and released into the lions den. Not the Detroit Lions though because they simply would roll over and die.

So, enough complaining and on to Sunday night’s game. Coming into the game the Patriots and the Cassel-face led offense are improving more and more every week. Meanwhile on the other side of the ball the Clots (not a typo) seem to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory on a regular basis. We have a team with a two game winning streak coming into town to face a team riding a two game losing streak.

All of a sudden Marvin Harrision has lost more than a step. To the point that he may be single covered on Sunday so the Pats can lock down on Reggie Wayne who is questionable. The Clots running game has been absent and anyone playing Fantasy Football with a Colts running back knows too well what I’m talking about. Both Addai and Rhodes are questionable for the game as well.

So I check in with my friends at ESPN.com to see some match-ups and the like. Then I see that everyone on Sunday Countdown picked the Pats for this game. Even Tom Jackson who hates everything New England. Then I get to the breakdown. They give the Pats the advantage in every category except QB (obviously), RB (um, not if Morris is in there, DB (even without Bob Sanders I have to agree with that), and special teams. That last one really bothers me. The Pats special teams as far as kick return defense isn’t great, but the kicking game has been very solid.

So who do I pick? Well with the Pats being a 5.5 point underdog, even if they lose this game it’ll only be by three. But I don’t think that’s going to happen. I say the Pats are going to kick the crap out of the Clots and silence the stupid Clot fans. Pats roll 42-13.

Back Monday with a recap. Bring on the Peyton Face. Go Pats!

Back Up And Running

So for everyone that checked in yesterday and found nothing, I apologize. My site was acting up and it had nothing to do with JC sending me pics from the Celtics game. But since he did, I figured I would share with everyone some scenes from the show.

My favorite is the last one where we see LeBron James making Peyton face. This guy is out of Cleveland as soon as possible. My understanding is that he’ll flee to New York and join Jay-Z in Brooklyn. All the losing in Cleveland, even if it’s in the Finals, has to eat away at him.

So that’s pretty much what I would have posted yesterday with a little more in depth coverage.

Short and sweet today but back in full effect tomorrow. If the Phillies win the World Series and no one watches, do they really win the World Series?

Not That I Was Watching

So the Phillies won the World Series last night… wait what? It was rained out? Like the whole game? Are you serious?

OK, so the World Series was postponed by rain last night as the teams were tied 2-2 in the sixth.

Awesome. So a World Series that no one is watching to begin with is now going to be delayed till probably Wednesday. Tuesday’s supposed to be rainy too.

It’s pretty cool in the sense that every player that wasn’t used (think bullpen) now will have an extra day off to rest up, plus you can use your starters out of the pen if you want to go for broke. I’m still not watching.

And speaking of not watching…

The Bruins won last night. 1-0 in overtime out in Edmonton. That’s right. The same Bruins team that captured our attention last spring not only won a game, but won a close game in overtime. The team has three overtime losses on the young season so hopefully this overtime win will flip a switch for the B’s.

The reason people weren’t watching was more so because the late start time out west not because people aren’t interested. In fact I found myself watching the Bruins the other night just because it looks so good in Hi-Def.

My friend Stew posed the question to me, “Are you going to give the Bruins a chance?”. Well, now that baseball is over it seems the Bruins will occupy my time on the off nights of the Celtics.

And speaking of the Celtics, tonight they raise banner 17 into the rafters tonight. That I will be watching.

Pats Win & Cover

So heading into the game I honestly thought that Steven Jackson was going to be the only problem the Pats would have. Then driving over to my brother’s house to watch the game I heard the starting lineup in which they said that Jackson was out of the game. Putting two plus two, I thought this would be a steamroll for the Patriots.

Well like we’ve said so many times for all our Boston teams, that’s why they play the games.

The game started off very scary when Dante Hall almost ran back a kick off for a touchdown. Thank God there was a flag on the play because that’s not the way you want to start a game. Instead of starting on the Pats 25, the Rams started on their own 32. And like so many times this season, the opponent marched down the field on the Pats but then the Pats red zone defense held strong and only gave up three points.

Look, the bottom line on the whole game was that I wasn’t worried. They went down three nothing, I wasn’t worried. They went down 10-7, 16-13, I still wasn’t worried. Nothing about any NFC West team worries me (that includes you Arizona). So when the Pats iced the game with a Cassel touchdown to Faulk I knew that was the game and I cursed Eli for getting Faulk off the waiver wire a spot ahead of me.

Now the Pats are tied atop the AFC East with the Buffalo Bills. Both teams are 5-2 and both teams lost to Miami. Overall the division looks in better shape than last season with a 4-3 Jets team and a 3-4 Miami team bring up the rear. All that said I think if even with Matt Cassel-face (Andy Gresh called him Masshole on the WBCN post game show) as the quarterback, there’s a very good chance this Patriots team wins the division and has 11-13 wins.

Like I said earlier, that’s why they play the games, but let’s look at what the Pats have over the next five weeks. At Indy who’s not been Indy this year but with the Pats banged up secondary it may be uncomfortable for Pats fans. Buffalo at home, Jets at home, at Miami, and then Pittsburgh at home. Pittsburgh is the only one that scares me, but if their running back situation continues to deteriorate, I say the Pats roll in that one.

For all of us who were scared when Brady went down, the optimists said that if the Pats watered down the offense and Cassel-face improved every week, the team would hopefully ride the defense to the playoffs. Now the secondary is in shambles, but the front seven is starting to play as advertised and Cassel-face is improving (even with 2 picks yesterday). Sure we want Tommy Touchdown back in there ASAP, but the 2-14 season we all feared seams a thing of the past and watching the Pats is fun again.

I’m Not Worried

In case you’ve been living under a rock you heard the news that Tom Brady had to have surgery on his knee again. Rumor has it that the Pats are pretty pissed about the whole thing. See the Pats wanted Brady to have the procedure done in Boston, Tom opted to listen to his family and have the surgery in California.

Well, the rumor circulating yesterday was that Tom may not be back for the 2009 season if complications keep happening. I’ve even heard worse case scenarios in which Brady could never play again, could lose the lower half of his leg to infection, and even death. The latter stuff of course is under a worst case scenario where he doesn’t have the infections treated.

Well, he’s treating with antibiotics to make sure that the infection doesn’t spread and the worst case scenarios don’t happen. So as the headline says, I’m not worried.

Onto this week. Which Patriots team is going to show up? The one that allowed the Chargers to destroy them, or the one that beat the snot out of the Broncos. It’ll be interesting to say the least.

We all know the game plan for the Chargers was to stop LT. Which of course allowed Philip Rivers to pass against an inferior Patriots secondary. The Pats were scorched for 306 yards and three scores. They held LT under 100 yards and allowed no rushing touchdowns.

Knowing all this you have to wonder if Belichick would use the same kind of game plan against Steven Jackson. Up until last week Jackson hasn’t been the stud he’s been the past few years. In fact last week was only his second 100+ rushing game of the year and three of his four touchdowns were scored against the Cowboys.

The Pats are a three point favorite this week. With the prospect of no Sammy Morris or LaMont Jordan the running burder looks to fall on Kevin Faulk and Benjarvus Green-Ellis. So ultimately the game is going to fall on the shoulders of AFC Player of the Week, Matt Cassel.

Hopefully we don’t see a lot of Cassel-face. Green-Ellis looked good in his time last Monday and should be good enough to take some of the pressure off Cassel. I say the Pats pull this one out, handily. Pats win 34-13.

Back Monday with a recap.
